Top layer, left-hand side: seven pair of white cotton panties, ironed and folded.

Top layer, right-hand side: one pair of nylon hose, dark brown, six pair of white cotton socks, three pair of colored wool socks.

Middle layer: two slips, a half-slip, two training bras (one black, one white), an old t-shirt, a man’s old dress white shirt, a nylon scarf and a wool scarf.

Bottom layer: one Kotex box with Kotex; also one empty Kotex box refilled with extra shoe-strings (loose), book matches, two empty nail-polish bottles, one plastic lens from a pair of sunglasses, a five-pack of balloons from Walgreen’s Drug Store, and a thumbnail-sized cartoon book; also six movie magazines, various titles, a rubber from Marcella Louise Timmons’s boyfriend, wrapped up in paper towels in a used compact circled with rubber bands, a box of 48 wax crayons, and three bubble-gum-machine adjustable plastic rings; and finally, one twice-folded sheet of paper with a mimeographed message in fuzzy purple ink, dated October, 1957, in pencil in the upper right hand corner:

Do you know that some people in our country want the Negroes to live with the white people? These people want us to be unhappy. They say we must go to school together. They say we must swim together and use the bathrooms together. We do not want to do these things. “Why do some people want us to live together?” you will ask. They want to make our country weak. If we are not happy, our strong and free country will grow weak. Did you know our country will grow weak if we mix our races? It will.
